This account of Alexander Hamilton's life, set in the late 1700s, is equally uplifting and heartbreaking. The musical remains timeless and fascinating owing to its expertly explored themes of love, tragedy, forgiveness, and ambition. The tale is skillfully expressed through hip-hop, featuring a varied cast of black and brown performers. “It assumes an exclusive meaning when you observe black and brown performers narrating the genesis of our nation,” stated musician Lin Manuel Miranda.
The Guardian expressed on the show's unconventional setting and shared only laudatory opinions. The author expressed, “Its rousing opening scenes bring to mind us of that grand American concept of equal rights and touch on slavery and civil rights in the 18th century. “I never expect making it past 20. In the place where I originated, some receive half as many,” chants Hamilton at the beginning, and his words resonate the precarious destiny that awaits numerous of America’s black or immigrant underprivileged stratum now, as talks concerning Black Lives Matter protests have actually emphasized.”
It’s true - the musical score of Hamilton is different from any other theater musical. The range of music styles, encompassing hip-hop, pop, and R&B, sets Hamilton apart from other musicals. Throughout the musical's 46 songs, the cast sing and rap approximately 20,000 words at a pace of roughly 144 words per minute. Besides its numerous accomplishments, Hamilton the Musical earned something few theatrical productions have achieved: a Pulitzer Prize. This critically acclaimed musical added one more accolade to its collection when it earned the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016.
Fun fact: The lyrics in "Guns and Ships" hold the record for the fastest spoken lyrics in Broadway musical history. It’s absolutely a jaw-dropping song!
